چکیده

The objective of this project was to investigate the effects of selecting sires for residual feed intake (RFI) on the performance of their daughters. Bulls with low or high estimated breeding values (EBV) for RFI were selected from the Angus Society of Australia sire summary and mated to Angus cross commercial cows at the Kansas State University Cow-Calf Unit in 2005 and 2006. The average EBV of lowand high-RFI bulls were −0.55 and 0.27 kg DM, respectively. Heifers born in 2006 were tested for feed intake in 2 groups (n = 24, n = 26), and heifers born in 2007 (n = 42) were sent to a commercial bull test facility for feed intake and BW gain tests. Body weights were collected every 14 d and used to calculate midtest BW and ADG. Actual feed intake was regressed on midtest metabolic BW and ADG to calculate an expected feed intake for each heifer. Residual feed intake was calculated by subtracting the expected intake from the actual intake. There were no significant differences between heifers sired by lowor high-RFI EBV bulls in RFI, feed intake, G:F, or BW gain (P > 0.05). Heifers in this study were being developed on a less energy-dense diet than the diet used to rank their sires. Genetic differences in RFI calculated in growing bulls may not have been expressed on the lower plane of nutrition of these developing heifers.

Growth Performance and Feed Conversion Efficiency of Crossbred Heifers

Theexperiment was conducted to investigate the growth performance and feed conversion efficiency of crossbred heifer at different age level in Government Dairy Farm in Bogra, Bangladesh. Twelve female crossbred heifers were equally distributed (n=3) into four groups [Group A: (7±2 months), B: (12±2 months), C: (15±2 months) and D: (20±2 months)] according to age and fed concentrate mix, rice st...

Relationship between feeding behavior and residual feed intake in growing Brangus heifers.

Residual feed intake (RFI) is a measure of feed efficiency defined as the difference between actual feed intake and expected feed intake required for maintenance and production. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between RFI, feeding behavior, and other performance traits in growing heifers. Individual DMI was measured in Brangus heifers (n = 115) fed a roughage-based...

Relationships of feeding behaviors with average daily gain, dry matter intake, and residual feed intake in Red Angus-sired cattle.

Feeding behavior has the potential to enhance prediction of feed intake and to improve understanding of the relationships between behavior, DMI, ADG, and residual feed intake (RFI) in beef cattle. Two cohorts, born in 2009 and 2010, the progeny of Red Angus bulls (n = 58 heifers and n = 53 steers), were evaluated during the growing phase, and the latter group of steers was also evaluated during...

Grass silage intake, rumen and blood variables, ultrasonic and body measurements, feeding behavior, and activity in pregnant beef heifers differing in phenotypic residual feed intake.

The objectives of this study were to quantify the phenotypic variation in residual feed intake (RFI) in pregnant beef heifers offered a grass silage diet and to characterize their productivity. Seventy-three pregnant (mean gestation d 198, SD = 27 d) Simmental and Simmental × Holstein-Friesian heifers (mean initial BW 548, SD = 47.5 kg) were offered grass silage ad libitum. Heifer DMI, BW, BCS,...
